What is Business Administration?

Business Administration has become a very broad term that encompasses tasks ranging from managerial strategies to administrative functions. The diverse nature of this field therefore covers an extremely wide range of subjects, and at College SA we are sure to have a programme that would be perfect for your individual needs. Whether your interest lies more in the secretarial and human resources side of Administration, or you prefer to learn more about the principles of business and accounting, enrolling for a course in Business Administration would always give you a competitive advantage.

What exactly does Business Administration involve?

Let's break down what we understand under Business Administration. When it comes to Administration, one could compare it to a parentwho runs a household. Someone has to organise and coordinate things in such a way that everybody knows what is expected of them and everything gets done on time. Of course, the parent cannot do everything on their own, so that parent delegates certain duties. While the one parent cooks, for example, the other parent could be asked to wash the car and mow the lawn, and the kids could pick up their toys after playing outside and clean their rooms. If there wasn't someone to coordinate these things and make sure that people actually do them, nothing would be completed successfully.

What functions does a Business Administrator perform?

A parent's job certainly does not stop at house chores. There are other things that need to be arranged, such as making a list of groceries, compiling a monthly budget, paying bills, meeting teachers, and generally being excellent at managing their time! So, how does this relate to Business Administration? Just like a parent, any Administrator needs to plan, organise, coordinate, mediate, control, strategise, budget, take stock, etc. Their task is to see to it that people work together to achieve the end goals in an effective manner. Not only do you need to understand people's behaviour and differences, but also motivate them to increase their productivity. Keeping the morale of a company or organisation high is directly linked to its success.

Another important part of Business Administration is the task of marketing. One would never be able to run a successful business if one cannot market and advertise your specific product or service. An understanding of entrepreneurship, tax structures, cash flow, and risk analysis is of the utmost importance. We can therefore deduce that an Administrator essentially plays an oversight role, which makes any qualification in this field such a sought after speciality, as there is a critical shortage of capable Business Administrators in the corporate world. They need to understand how a business functions while at the same time being able to bring out the best in its employees.

Institute of Business Studies (IBS)

The Institute of Business Studies (IBS) is an affiliate of the South African branch of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), and therefore all the IBS qualifications are also accredited by Fasset. The programmes offered by the IBS serve as a stepping stone to more advanced ICSA courses, so by obtaining the broad skills base of the IBS qualifications, students would enable themselves to eventually choose from various professions within the fields of commerce and industry.

All the IBS programmes are aimed at gaining business experience, while it also seeks to provide training in commercial, legal and general accounting. These business qualifications are highly recognised in the corporate world, so if you have not obtained formal school qualifications but wish to enter the world of commerce and industry, an IBS diploma will pave your way to success. College SA is accredited by IBS as a training provider.
