What is CompTIA Network+?


Your CompTIA Network+ certification validates your knowledge and skills as a networking professional. It is a vendor-neutral certification that recognizes a technician’s ability to describe the features and functions of networking components and to install, configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and services.

Programme Outcomes


1.    Tactics for Winning

This is the first module that all students have to complete once they have registered with College SA. This module is designed to introduce students to the College. In this module, you will learn more about how Distance Learning works and what the best ways are to study and to prepare for assessments.

2.    Network Basics

In this module you will learn how to describe the basic components of a network. You will also learn how to identify characteristics of network technologies as well as how to analyze the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model.

3.    Wired computer-to-computer connections

In this module you will learn how to identify wired network cables and connectors as well as how to install and configure network interface and modem PCI cards.

4.    Network-to-network connections

In this module you will learn how to identify network-to-network connection components, install LAN wiring as well as how to identify LAN wiring tests and equipment.

5.    Wired internetworking devices

In this module you will learn how to differentiate between basic internetworking devices as well as how to identify specialized internetworking devices.

6.    Wired communication standards

In this module you will learn how to describe the functions of the protocols in the TCP/IP protocol suite and how to configure TCP/IP. You will also learn how to install and configure DHCP and DHCPv6.

7.    Wireless Networking

In this module you will learn how to identify the hardware components needed to create a wireless connection as well as how to differentiate between the various communication standards used in wireless networks. You will also learn how to install and configure a wireless network connection.

8.    Security threats and mitigation

In this module you will learn how to describe and explain common security threats as well as how to explain ways to mitigate security threats.

9.    Security practices

In this module you will learn how to secure an operating system as well as how to secure network devices.

10.    Network access control
In this module you will learn how to explain network authentication methods as well as the basic concepts behind public key infrastructure. You will also learn about the methods of remote access security and the methods to secure a wireless network.

11.    Monitoring

In this module you will learn how to monitor the network as well as how to read event logs to monitor activity.

12.    Troubleshooting

In this module you will learn how to explain the basic troubleshooting steps and how to prepare toolkits for troubleshooting. You will also learn how to troubleshoot the physical and logical network as well as how to implement a network troubleshoot methodology based on a given scenario.

Recommended 10 months of study

Entrance Requirements


Although it is not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Network+ candidates have at least nine months experience in network support or administration or adequate training, along with the CompTIA A+ certification.

Hardware and Software Required


  • At least 1 GHz 32 bit or 1.4 GHz 64 bit processor
  • At least 1 GB RAM
  • At least 50GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
  • A DVD-ROM drive
  • A graphics card that supports DirectX 9 graphics with:
    • WDDM driver
    • 128 mb of graphics memory
    • Pixel shader 2.0 in hardware; and
    • 32 bits-per-pixel
  • SVGA Monitor; and
  • An available PCI slot

You will need the following software:

  • Windows Server 2008 standard
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Microsoft Virtual PC SPI
  • Network Monitor 3.2; and
  • Adobe Reader

Assessment and Award


This course will prepare you to take your N10-004 CompTIA Network+ exam.

You will need to contact a Prometric Testing centre two weeks before you want to write your exams on telephone number 0800 991 120. The exam fees are not included in your College SA programme fees.

Once you have successfully completed the examinations, your Prometric Testing Centre will provide you with a report and CompTIA will issue you with a certification pack. Included in your certification pack is a credit card with the details of the exams that you have passed as well as the expiry date, which means you will have to update your exam every three years by enrolling on CompTIA’s continuing education program to keep your certification current.

Your N10-004 CompTIA Network+ exam proves your competency in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic network infrastructure. The exam consists of 100 questions and the duration of the exam is 90 minutes.

Your passing score is 720 out of 900 which is 80%

You will write your CompTIA exams at one of the Prometric testing centres in your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the Classes?
College SA is a home study college. This means that you do not have to go to class. You study at home, on the train, at work, after hours, on your lunch break, or over weekends! This means that you save a lot of costs that classroom students have to pay. Things like travel costs and accommodation are expensive for classroom students. Obviously it is also safer to study in your own home. It also means that you can work while you study, so you can earn a salary and get your qualification at the same time.
Do I get study material from the College?
College SA includes all your books, course items and study material with your course. So unlike other colleges, we shall not give you a list of books to buy. One you have paid for the course, you are entitled to recieve all the study material you need from us. In some cases there might be recommended reading materials which the college does not provide. But this will only be materials that are not essentials to passing your course.
What is the cost of the study material?
Your study material is included in your course fees, so the college does not charge you for study material.
