What is Graphic Design?

A graphic designer arranges and uses creative elements like photos, illustrations, font types, shapes, colour and texture by means of graphic design software such as Photoshop in order to create logos, advertisements for print, book designs, brochures, billboards, product packaging, posters, magazine layout, newspaper layout and more.

Why should I study Graphic Design?

Graphic Design is visual communication and it is everywhere in print media. If you are creative and would like to express that creativity through technology, then a career as a graphic designer is for you.

Layout designers - These designers decide where to place an image on a specific article, advert or product packaging. You see this on brochures, magazines, newspapers, etc. They decide which colour and what types of fonts and sizes to use. This is very important, as these elements are aimed at getting the public’s attention and eventually increasing sales.

Flash designers - Flash is one of the latest web designing programs on the market. Web designers use this program to make websites more interactive. They can upload short movies and create other visual effects on a site. Adding audio and graphics is also important to get high ratings for a site, which in turn leads to higher sales ratings.

Illustrators - An illustrator meets with their clients to find out exactly what they want. They work with pencil, inks or digital art to create designs to go onto fabrics, product packaging, gift wrap paper, books, etc. An illustrator usually has to come up with few designs and then confer with the client to see what suits them best.

Photoshop artists - A Photoshop artist reworks digital images to increase the quality and overall appearance of them. They re-shape, change image colours, and edit backgrounds to the customer’s liking. Photoshop applications have become very popular amongst the younger generation as they all want to upload the best possible images to their social media profiles and albums.
