WHAT DOES WRITING SHORT STORIES ENTAIL?Short stories are exactly what its name implies: stories that are relatively short and don’t comprise a whole book, but are rather combined with others of its kind to complete a certain theme. Although the length of short stories can vary quite a lot, it is generally agreed that short stories are limited to a maximum of about 5000 words. The way in which short stories differ from novels or other fictional works is that is has to bring across the message in a much shorter period of time than is allowed in, for instance, a story book. This implies that short story writers need the ability to convey a message in a limited timeframe, whilst at the same time they need to keep their audiences interested and compelled to continue reading. Clever techniques are used to create tension and suspense, as these writers don’t have the luxury of unlimited storytelling time. The writing often contains moral lessons or critical views on certain aspects of society, written to make readers think about these issues and how it impacts our lives. COURSE STRUCTURE SUMMARY
