WHAT DOES WRITING FOR CHILDREN ENTAIL?Writing for children takes many forms and provides many with an enjoyable living and lucrative hobby. The range of markets varies widely from first readers to teenagers’ novels, from picture books to scripts, from pop-up books to plays. As a writer who focuses on children’s literature, you need to know what appeals to them and what type of language usage would be appropriate in each context. You’ll also use different imagery for different age groups, since your story needs to be relevant to their unique frame of reference. For a two year old, it would be a bit far-fetched to grasp a tale about dragons and wizards, whilst this would be perfect for an older child, for instance.Another thing that is quite unique when it comes to writing for children is that a good children’s writer knows which topics to address for which age group. Very often these writing can become educational fables that teach children certain life lessons, but it’s part of your job as a children’s writer to know how to approach this.
