| Accreditation Information |

When a college or university wants to make sure that the courses that they offer are accepted by employers and companies in South Africa and even in other countries, they must be accredited with an accreditation body. This means that the college or university must agree to and follow certain rules and standards that the accreditation body made. So, if you want your college course to be accredited, you must make sure that the content of the course (what the course teaches) is what the accreditation body wants it to be. This means that the accreditation body has some control over what courses a college or university can offer and what is contained in those courses. The most important part of a college or university’s accreditation is that it must be registered with the Department of Education (DoE). This does not mean that the college is now a government college. To be able to have any other kind of accreditation, the college must at least be registered at the Department of Education so that they can make sure that the college follows certain basic standards. If the college then gets accredited with another institution, those standards may become much higher, depending on the institution that the college is accredited with. As you can see, a college or university can be accredited with more than one institution or body. When you want to study at a college, it is your responsibility to make sure that that college is registered with the Department of Education. If you study at a college that is not registered with the Department of Education, you will in the end have a useless qualification. Ways to contact the Department of Education:

The Department of Education is the part of the government that is responsible for everything to do with education, from basic education and further education up to higher education. They must make sure that there are enough teachers in the schools and that all schools, colleges and universities do what they are supposed to. The Department of Education must also create the school curriculum and make sure that the curriculum is successful. Basically the Department of Education is in charge of South Africa’s education and training. The second part of a college’s accreditation is the SETA accreditation . SETA is the Sector Education and Training Authority. SETA is responsible for collecting levies (like a fee) from the companies in a sector to give bursaries to students who want to study to be able to work in that sector. This means that all the companies in a sector helps to train more people to work in that sector. Here is a list of SETAs and a link to their websites and a telephone number if you want to know more about them: (011) 265 5900 (011) 726 4026 (012) 301 5600 (011) 805 9661

At the moment there are 21 SETAs as you can see from the list that is above. If you want to make sure a college’s courses are SETA accredited, you can go to the SETA website of the sector you are interested in (for example BankSETA if you are interested in banking). You can also go to the college’s website and check their accreditation status. Lastly a college’s accreditation must be verified by Umalusi. Umalusi is an independant organisation that has to make sure that a school or college’s qualifications are up to standard. If you wrote your matric certificate exams, you will know that Umalusi is the organisation that gives out your matric certificate at the end of it all. Without Umalusi, no qualification in South Africa would have any real meaning. This is because Umalusi sets the standard and makes sure that everybody keeps to that standard. Umalusi is also responsible for reviewing the standards to make sure that they are good and relevant. Ways to contact Umalusi
