The truth about Matric – Let us share some facts with you:

  1. Only about 50% of the children that start school ever get to sit in a Matric class – the rest leave school before they even reach Matric.

  2. If we were to measure the Matric pass rate by looking at how many learners should be in Matric (instead of at how many learners actually write Matric), the failure rate is close to 79%.

  3. Matric does not properly prepare you for a job. Employers are looking for candidates with practical skills and experience. In many situations, work experience will be more valuable than your academic qualifications.

  4. There are many courses that you can study even if you have not passed Matric.

Ask yourself – Do I really need Matric?

If you want to study towards a degree at university, you will need a Matric certificate. You will also need to make sure that you choose the right combination of subjects for university exemption, and that your marks are high enough to meet the university admission requirements. In addition to this, you will need to write (and pass) the relevant university entrance exams.

If you want to study at a college or other academic institution, you will not necessarily need to have a Matric certificate. The entry requirements for college courses vary, so you will have to do some research to find out about the different courses that are available, and what the entry requirements are.

Many colleges offer a variety of short courses, certificate courses and diploma courses that you can study without having completed Matric. Depending on your age and academic level, you might even be able to study a course that is equivalent to Matric (i.e. NQF level 4).

If you are over the age of 23, you may be granted exemption from some of the entry requirements for certain courses.
