Interior decorating is a very interesting and challenging profession.  When you use interior decorating, you have to use both your creative and your technical side to find the best way to decorate the interior environment.

In interior decorating you have to research the products you want to use as well as the space you want to decorate.  You have to analyse your products and space and you must have a very good knowledge of the creative process that you will need to follow to get the space perfectly decorated.

The history of interior decorating
Interior decorating started as soon as people lived in permanent homes. Since the beginning of time people have decorated their houses to suit their tastes and their needs. And these people had no formal training. Some of these early decorators are:

  • Elsie de Wolfe
    • She was an American actress, interior decorator and author during the 1980s. She wrote the book The House in Good Taste. According to The New Yorker she invented interior design as a profession.
  • Syrie Maugham
    • During the 1920s and 1930s Syrie Maugham was the leading interior decorator. She is well-known for making Rooms decorated completely in white very popular.
  • Sybil Colefax
    • During the first half of the 1900s, Sybil Colefax was a very well-known socialite and interior decorator. She began consulting in interior design after she lost all her money in the famous Wall Street Crash in 1929.
  • Dorothy Draper
    • This lady was very influential in interior decorating in the early to mid 1900s. She wrote the book Decorating is Fun! How to be your own decorator.
  • Pierre François Léonard Fontaine
    • This French man was an architect, interior decorator and designer. He is famous for designing and decorating the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
In the past kings, queens, presidents and lords and ladies used interior decorators to create the perfect home. It was the privilege of the rich to be able to afford interior decorators because decorators were very few. Nowadays anybody can be an interior decorator since there are so many courses available. Interior decorating is all about following a theme in your decoration. These themes are often based on a period in history or on a certain culture. Styles like these include the Victorian style, Islamic style, Feng Shui and even Gothic. Sometimes these styles are mixed to create a special atmosphere. Every part of an interior decoration must contribute in some way to form or function, or both. That means that the thing that is used in the decorating must either have a function or a use, or it must contribute to the theme of the decorating.

Famous interior decorators

Some of the most famous interior decorators are Charles and Ray Eames, Knoll, and Herman Miller. They are the trendsetters when it comes to using old furniture styles. These styles come from the 1950s and 1960s – just after the war. This furniture was created from new material that was developed for the war. There are many popular TV shows that are about interior decorating. In the UK there are shows like 60 Minute Makeover, Changing Rooms and Selling Houses. In the UK there are many interior decorators whose work is shown on these kinds of TV shows, like Linda Barker and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Celebrities are some of the people who use interior designers the most. And they even DIY! Cindy Crawford (former model) is a featured “mom expert” on BabyStyle website. She is a celebrity and an interior decorator! There are many famous interior decorators all over the world. The best decorators work for televisions shows or celebrities, as was already mentioned.

The interior decorating industry in South Africa
There are many companies who hire interior decorators permanently. For smaller companies, interior decorators will usually work on a contract basis and get paid for every job they do. They are not employed full-time.

Twenty-six percent of the interior design industry is made up of freelance or self-employed designers. These are usually the people who work the hardest. Interior decorators have to meet deadlines and work within a budget.
