Suggestions to help you decide WHAT to study
WHY do you want to study? This is a very important question that a lot of people forget to ask. Are you studying:
A. Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills for your current job?
B. Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills so that you can change jobs but still stay in the same industry / type of job?
C. Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills so that you change jobs and enter into a completely different industry?
D. Because your boss has told you that you need to study?
E. Because you have some spare time on your hands and you want to learn something interesting and exciting?
F. Because you are considering starting your own business venture?
G. Because you are unemployed and you need some kind of education to improve your chances of getting a job?
What did YOU answer?
If you answered A: Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills for your current job:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- What skills do you currently lack for your current job?
- Have any of your colleagues or your managers suggested to you areas in which you could improve?
- What skills do you think would make the biggest difference to how you perform your job?
- If you had to look at job advertisements for your kind of job, what do those advertisements state are the skills that are necessary for that job?
- Do you feel you adequately have all those skills?
If you answered B: Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills so that you can change jobs but still stay in the same industry / type of job:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- Do you know what job it is you would like to change to?
- If you had to guess what skills are needed for that job, what would you say those skills are?
- If you had to look at job advertisements for the job you would like to change to, what do these advertisements state are the skills that are necessary for that job? Which of those skills do you which to improve on?
If you answered C: Because you want to improve your knowledge and skills so that you change jobs and enter into a completely different industry:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- Do you know what industry you would like to change to?
- Do you know what job in that industry you would like to change to?
- If you had to think about that industry, what would you say are the skills necessary to excel in that industry?
- If you had to think about that job in that industry that you would like to change to, what would you say are the skills necessary to excel in that job?
- If you had to look at job advertisements for the job you would like to change to, what do these advertisements state are the skills that are necessary for that job? Which of those skills do you which to improve on?
If you answered D: Because your boss has told you that you need to study:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- What did your boss tell you that you need to study?
- Do you think that you might need to improve on skills other than those mentioned by your boss? If so, what are those skills?
- Do you need some kind of qualification because you never completed your Matric?
- Would it be possible for your company to pay towards your studies?
If you answered E: Because you have some spare time on your hands and you want to learn something interesting and exciting:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- What are your personal interests / hobbies?
- Is there something that you think you would like to study – even if it has nothing to do with your current job? If so, what would you like to study?
- Have you watched any TV programmes that have sparked an interest in something – for example, Detective skills?
- Are there any careers that you find interesting that you would like to learn more about, but not necessarily so that you can go into that career? In other words, just to improve you general knowledge about those careers.
- Have you read any books that have inspired you to learn a new skill or hobby? If so, what are those skills or hobbies?
If you answered F: Because you are considering starting your own business venture:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- What kind of business would you like to start? In other words, in which industry would you like to start a business? For example, Child Day Care, Fitness, Detective, Human Resources.
- Do you need to learn any new skills, or get any qualifications, in order for you to start your business? If so, what are those skills or qualifications?
- Do you feel that you would benefit from some general business skills? For example, knowledge regarding tax, knowledge of labour laws, knowledge of basic accounting? If so, which skills in particular would you like to learn?
If you answered G: Because you are unemployed and you need some kind of education to improve your chances of getting a job:
Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a piece of paper:
- What kind of job would you like to get?
- What are the skills or qualifications necessary for that job?
- What kinds of jobs are available in your community?
- What are the skills or qualifications necessary for those kinds of jobs?
- Do you need some kind of qualification because you never completed your Matric?
Now that you have answered the questions, and written those answers down, it should be easier for you to see what kind of course would be best for you. Don’t worry if you could not answer all the questions. What is important is that you thought about the questions and the answers.
