The matric results are finally here! After we waited for so long to get them, we finally have our results. We were anxious for so long about what our results are going to be. And now we know. So what now? If you are anything like me, you were really worried about how your marks are going to turn out. Maybe you expected to get a distinction in one or more of your subjects. Did you get it? I’m so glad if you did, that is amazing! Well done, really. If you didn’t get it, don’t sweat. Great marks really aren’t everything, you know. You can study on no matter what your marks are. But more about that later. The point is, you’ve got what you’ve got and you have to work with it. I know it’s hard, I know you’re afraid of your family and friends’ reactions when they hear that you didn’t do so great. But hey, this is you. Nobody can be you. You can still show them your quality. You are not defined by you marks and achievements. Your marks and achievements are defined by you. I know it’s terrible to feel like you failed. You feel like you can just give up and not care anymore. But it’s no big deal if didn’t do as well as you hoped, or even if you didn’t pass last year. You have the world of possibilities ahead of you. You have so many choices! Your future is not busted by not doing so great in matric. You can still do anything! If you have the will to succeed, you can. You can repeat matric if you didn’t make it last year. Or you can take any number or courses at a college, whether you passed matric or not. Really, it’s true. Everybody told me “you can’t study if you don’t do well in matric”. That’s nonsense! If you want to go to university, you must pass matric AND have the right subjects. You must get good marks too, because university is really hard. Then you still have to write the entrance exam and so on. If you want to go to college you don’t need to have matric, but in most cases you will need to have at least Grade 10. At some colleges you will need Grade 11 or 12, but most will be fine with Grade 10. There are even some colleges where you don’t have to have Grade 10 or 12, but you will have needed to pass a course that is at the same level as Grade 10 (NQF 3) or 12 (NQF 4). Go check out this webpage (http://www.collegesa.co.za/no-matric-no-problem.html), it’s got great information for you, no matter what your matric status is, if you passed or not. Let me show you some of the stats for Matric 2010. In 2009 60,7% of matrics passed. In 2010 67,8% passed. That’s really good, considering the Soccer World Cup and the teachers’ strikes. There were so many things that messed with our school year. So we can all be really proud of ourselves that we did as well as this. What amazes me is the fact that 83,5% of matrics wrote seven subjects. Wow! That is amazing. I always thought that the seventh subject is reserved for the really smart kids. But the matrics of 2010 showed me differently. You are one of the smart kids. So you see? It doesn’t matter if you didn’t do so well in matric; you are still in the race. You can still go on and study. You can still be CEO of your own company, you can be the best scientist there is. You can become the ultimate fitness coach. There are so many options out there, you just have to find the one that is right for YOU. What are your plans for the future? Maybe you thought to go to university and now that isn’t an option anymore. But you can still look at the other options. Don’t give up the search before you found what you are looking for. Perseverance, keeping on until you succeed, is what makes you great. What are your options? I cannot name them all, I don’t know them all. But here are a few:
