What is a SETA? A SETA is a Sector Education and Training Authority. SETAs are responsible for learnerships, internships, unit based skills programmes, and apprenticeships. There are 21 SETAs and each has a specific sector that it focuses on, for example THETA is the tourism and hospitality SETA and so on. All SETAs are responsible for the private and the public sector in their specific sector. What does SETA do? One of the things SETA is responsible for, is collecting the skills levies from employers within each sector. This money is then used for the education and training of people in that sector. In this way there’s always some money available for new people to be trained to work in that sector. SETA also helps colleges and other institutions of learning to register for SAQA and other accreditation bodies. They do this to make sure that the courses that are offered by the colleges are up to standard and that the education that people get in a sector is what they need to be able to work in that sector. Which SETAs are there?
