The difference between Matric and IBS NQF4

The difference between Matric and IBS NQF4

When we speak about different qualifications and the NQF levels they fall under, it is very easy to become confused about what the differences are. To make sure you are clear on what the differences between the qualifications are, we would like to explain this briefly.

What is a Matric certificate?

In order to complete your school education, you have to write all the Grade 12 exams to get your year mark which determines if you pass or fail. If you pass, you receive a Matric certificate.

What can I do with a Matric certificate?

When you obtain a Matric certificate, you are granted access to higher education institutions such as colleges and universities if your marks where good and you had the appropriate subjects.

Some job applications require a Matric certificate as a minimum requirement, so if you have one, you can apply for this position.

What happens when I have left school without completing Matric?

If you did not complete your school education, you cannot complete a Matric qualification on a part-time basis or through distance learning, but you CAN study other courses. If you get a college qualification that is at NQF4 level, it means that you can apply for a job that has Matric as a minimum requirement for entry.

What is an IBS NQF4 qualification?

The IBS NQF4 qualification is a course offered by the Institute of Business Studies that teaches you business skills to become a general clerk. It gives you access to further your studies at institutes like ICSA and ICB, to name but a few.

The IBS NQF4 qualification will also enable you to continue your studies in business so that you can eventually access higher education qualifications such as ACCA and CIMA.

What can I do with an IBS NQF4 qualification?

Having a NQF4 qualification would place you in the same category as someone who has completed a Matric qualification at school, so if you obtain this qualification, you can apply for a job that has Matric as a minimum requirement for entry.

Is an IBS NQF4 qualification the SAME as a Matric certificate?

No. The ONLY way to get a Matric certificate is to attend school. You have to write all the Grade 12 exams to get your year mark which determines if you pass or fail.

Is an IBS NQF4 qualification an ALTERNATIVE to a Matric certificate?

Yes. If you left school without completing Matric and study the IBS NQF4 qualification, you can apply for a job that requires a Matric certificate. This qualification would be an alternative to Matric.

Always be sure what it is you really want to do for the rest of your life. If you are a creative soul then qualification in business studies shouldn’t be your first choice. Also determine what you want to use a Matric qualification for.

  • If you want Matric to enrol at a university, you cannot do the IBS course. This will not help you.
  • If you need Matric to apply for a job or promotion, then IBS will definitely help you.
